From earning his CCCs to founding his own practice, Darius Thomas, CCC-SLP, shows how one person can make a difference on both individuals and speech-language pathology as a whole
Darius Thomas, a visionary in the field of speech-language pathology, embraces the belief that effective communication is vital for every individual’s success, recognizing that diverse communication styles can vary greatly. With his trailblazing spirit, as a successful business owner and representing three minority groups (Black, gay and a male) in the profession, Darius empowers patients to chart their own distinctive journey toward achieving their goals.
The profound notion of building meaningful connections with patients captivated Darius and led him to the field of speech-language pathology. Reflecting on his interactions with clients and witnessing the transformative impact that speech-language pathology can have on their lives, Darius discovered his true calling. He wholeheartedly recognized that this was the path he was meant to pursue, dedicating himself to making a difference through his work.
With a Master’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Howard University, Darius embarked on an extraordinary journey, establishing his own practice, Dynamic Therapy, a mere month after graduation. Since then, Dynamic Therapy has blossomed into a thriving enterprise, extending its reach across six states and even reaching clients in Europe. With a wide range of services available, Dynamic Therapy caters to individuals spanning from 10 months to 97 years old, providing exceptional care and support in various settings including homes, clinics, schools, and virtual platforms. Darius’ unwavering commitment to serving diverse populations has enabled Dynamic Therapy to touch the lives of countless individuals, empowering them to achieve their communication goals and unlock their full potential.
Darius deeply values the impact of his Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCCs) on his professional journey. “My CCCs have been instrumental in shaping me into the clinician I am today,” Darius expressed with gratitude. “The CCCs ensure that I am culturally responsive, well-informed about the latest evidence-based practices, and equipped to provide valuable guidance to the clinicians under my supervision, as well as those I train and mentor.”
Darius’ profound impact on one particular patient, a young boy whom he has been assisting for over four years, exemplifies the significance of personalized and evidence-based care. Although the patient’s diagnosis may not have been immediately apparent, through collaboration with the child’s mother and the exploration of various approaches, Darius identified tailored treatments that fostered the patient’s progress. Earning his Certificate of Clinical Competence has instilled in him the understanding that each patient requires an individualized approach, as there is no universal treatment that fits all.
Darius recognizes the invaluable benefits of easy access to information on diverse evidence-based approaches, coupled with the professional knowledge shared at ASHA conferences and the latest research articles. “Having these resources at hand is crucial for providing the best care,” Darius expressed. “Applying these practices to this patient and witnessing his growth has been a tremendous accomplishment for me.”
In addition to his dedication to patient care, Darius places great importance on representation in his field. “The shortage of African American speech-language pathologists is a significant issue,” he remarked. “It is crucial for individuals from minority backgrounds to have access to providers who share their experiences and identities.”
Darius’ impact extends beyond his work with individual patients. He actively contributes to shaping the future of speech-language pathology, holding volunteer leadership positions within ASHA, the National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing, and the District of Columbia Speech-Language Association.
As an entrepreneur and leader, Darius credits his CCCs for equipping him with the knowledge and confidence to succeed. “Certification brings a sense of assurance and empowerment,” he affirmed. “I wholeheartedly recommend pursuing the CCCs to anyone considering it.”
